The University of Jyväskylä (JYU) is a research university with about 15,000 students, focusing on human and natural sciences. It was founded in 1863 as a teaching seminary, but has expanded to a full range of research and teaching programs.

The JYU Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy is known for its cooperative nature and aim to cross the boundaries between disciplines. Social Sciences and Philosophy department staff includes experts in migration policy, media studies, citizenship, discourse analysis, industrial relations, education policy, family studies, and work-life balance, among many other areas.

The department has been host to a number of EU funded projects such as Dr. Jari Kaukua’s ERC project “Epistemic Transitions in Islamic Philosophy, Theology and Science: From the 12th to the 19th Century”, Prof. Tiina Silvasti’s 7th Framework project TRANSMANGO, on food production systems, and Dr. Tiina Kontinen’s Growth into Citizenship in Civil Society Encounters, to mention a few.

	Nathan Lillie Professor Nathan Lillie is a Professor of Social and Public Policy at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He holds a PhD from the Cornell University, School of Industrial and Labour Relations. He has worked as a researcher at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, and as an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, Department of International Business and Management. In addition to participating the SIRIUS project, he has been PI on research projects such as the ERC funded project “Transnational Work and the Evolution of Sovereignty” (263782), on the regulation of posted work in the European Union, the Academy of Finland funded “Industrial Citizenship and Labour Mobility in the EU, a Migrant Centered Study of Estonia-Finland and Albania-Italy Labour Mobility,” and the DG Employment and Social Affairs funded Protecting Mobility through Improving Labour Rights Enforcement in Europe (PROMO)”, VS/2016/0222. His work has appeared in journals such as Work, Employment and Society, British Journal of Industrial Relations, International Studies Quarterly and European Journal of Common Market Studies. He has been active in European trade union networks as a scientific advisor and participant in EU Commission, ETUI and trade union sponsored research and dissemination activities. Prof. Lillie’s research interests include migration and labour markets, labour market segmentation and precarious work, European level regulation of mobility and employment, and the development of biographical methods for understanding the impact of EU regulation on everyday lives of workers.

	Ilona Bontenbal Ilona Bontenbal is a PhD student at the University of Jyväskylä, in Finland. She has a Master’s Degree in sociology, history and political science. The focus of her PhD research is on the migration and development nexus. In her research, she is looking at ways that migration and migrants can affect societal change from the viewpoint of social remittances. Before joining the SIRIUS project, she has worked on a project related to Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education in Finland (SIHME) and a project focusing on the Protecting Mobility through Improving Labour Rights Enforcement in Europe (PROMO). Her research interests include migration and labour markets, the integration of migrants, the migration and development nexus, remittances and transnationalism.
